Nano-silica composite fire-rated glass: construction and performance

Nano-silica composite fire-rated glass is a laminated insulating fire-rated glass (“EI” class) comprising two or more glass substrates bonded with an inorganic expandable nano-silica fire-resistant adhesive. The adhesive is injected into the laminated glass cavity and cured through polycondensation to form a rigid, transparent inorganic layer.

Under fire exposure, the adhesive foams, expands and carbonises, generating a low-thermal-conductivity barrier that blocks flames, smoke and heat from reaching the non-fire side. This limits thermal radiation and preserves the integrity of the protected face. The product meets EI-class fire resistance ratings for integrity and insulation of 30, 60, 90, 120 and 180 minutes.

The cured nano-silica interlayer is colour-stable, transparent and resistant to delamination or bubbling under prolonged solar exposure. The laminated build-up reduces the risk of outer-ply fragmentation and spontaneous breakage, while offering sound insulation and high visible light transmittance. Panel thicknesses range from 10 mm to 75 mm; maximum format is 2400 × 4910 mm. Rectangular, square and circular shapes are available.

The manufacturer notes that high-strength tempered substrates are processed to a surface stress of 170–250 MPa, using high-air-pressure quenching, elevated heating temperatures and extended heating cycles to minimise residual stress.
